Ferris State University, also known as simply FSU or Ferris, is a public university with its main campus in Big Rapids, which is the county seat of Mecosta County, situated in the US state of Michigan, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 11 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Big Rapids is best known for the fact that it is home to Ferris State University, as well as for the fact that it is the birthplace of former Commandant of the Marine Corps Ben Hebard Fuller, Clint Hurdle, a former baseball player for the Kansas City Royals and former manager of the Colorado Rockies, and for the fact that it is the hometown of the Commanding Officer of the USS Mesa Verde, Commander Larry Legree.
FSU was officially established in September, 1884, and it currently is the ninth largest university in Michigan, having an enrollment estimated at a number of more than 13 800 students. The university offers more than 170 educational programs, through 10 different colleges, in various areas of study, including in Arts and Sciences, Engineering Technology, Business, and Education and Human Services.
Ferris' athletic teams are known as the Bulldogs, who compete in 14 men's and women's sports at the NCAA Division II level, as well as Division I men's ice hockey, in which they gave their best season performance ever, in the program's NCAA Division I history for the 2002-03 season, with a school-best 31-10-1 overall record. Overall, the Bulldogs have been NCAA Division II runner-ups 3 times - in '89 in wrestling, and in 2004 and 2006, in women's golf - and they also won the 1994 Club Sports National Championship, in men's ice hockey (ACHA Division II).
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable FSU alumni, there are: George Ryan - former Governor of Illinois, Al Jardine - guitarist for The Beach Boys, Carlton Brewster - wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints, and Christopher Cushman - Star Trek illustrator.
